Admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2015, I started my legal career in a law firm and was exposed to a variety of high-calibre business visa matters which allowed me to hone my migration knowledge. 

To be honest, I never expected to stay in migration for long when I first started, but the turning point came when I got my first case approved.

I can still vividly remember how happy the client was that he offered to take me to lunches and dinners which I politely declined, of course. We stayed friends even after the matter concluded and met up from time to time where he told me how his family is settling in and the plans he has for his children. 

There was also this glint in his eyes at every mention of his children as compared to the lifeless eyes when we first met. Back then, he already had a few applications rejected and was already losing hope, having wasted tens of thousands in fees and years of uncertainty.

From then on, I realised that helping someone to migrate to Australia was not just a transactional legal matter but rather, helping someone migrate to a brighter future. This “newfound ability and sense of satisfaction” fell in line with my egalitarian belief and propelled me to adopt migration as my area of expertise.

Being an immigrant myself, I am thoroughly aware of the complexities involved and the fears that applicants might have when they embark on their migration journey.

My passion for migration matters can be traced back to my pre-professional years as a law student at the University of Tasmania. Even back then, I knew Australia was to be my new permanent home. 

With that goal in mind, I lodged my own Visa application with the belief that a law student should possess the knowledge and skill to navigate the complexities of the visa application process. However, I was shocked to find that my application was rejected on a technicality and was told to leave Australia! 

At that point, I truly felt like my planned future in Australia was quickly dissipating. Thankfully, with the help from the right people, I managed to secure my permanent residency and is now a proud father of two.

My takeaway from this is that you are not alone and you should seek help before starting the migration journey no matter how much you think you know the process.

Having learnt the hard way, I truly understand that the stress of an unfamiliar visa application coupled with the challenges of moving to a foreign land, would be a daunting notion even for the best of us.
